If you ever spent time in the military, known guys in the military, or simply just live in or near a military town (like I do), then a story like Sammy’s will likely sound familiar.
Sammy entered the USMC to serve his country at an early age. He entered like most kids – in pretty good shape. He was a little small (5’5″ tall and weighed 135lbs), but was muscular for his size and lean. The words “svelte” would come to mind. He even was on the amateur boxing team.
A few years later, Sammy was got out of the military and began his life after the Corps. Like all of us “regular guys”, life began to throw curve balls at him. Hardships in everyday life. Work-related injuries. A simple lack of time and shift in priorities.
It didn’t seem like much at first, but as we all know – time can get away from you when you’re not looking. Fast forward just a few short years later, and Sammy weighed almost 200lbs. He was roughly 65lbs heavier than when he entered the military.
But to make matters worse, Sammy had since entered law enforcement – he was a cop by profession. Bad jokes and stereotypes aside, being in such poor physical condition could literally cost Sammy his life.
It was starting to actually become a downward, self-perpetuating spiral. He’d gotten injured, and thus gained weight. But because he was too heavy and out shape, he couldn’t keep up with the younger guys, and would get injured in the line of duty again. Then he’d be on the shelf, gain more weight, and the whole process would just repeat itself.
In trying to come back from one of his injuries, Sammy had to take the required physical exam. His doctor told him he “had the lungs of a man 100 years old”.
Sammy went out and bought one of those hyped-up informercial fitness programs. You know…that “crazy” one.
(*wink, wink*)
It worked…ok. I mean, he lost roughly 20lbs in 60 days – so that was cool. But the massive amount of unnecessary plyometrics (something Sammy’s body was NOT ready for) hurt him more than it helped him. Yeah, it was great that he’d lost some weight, but his ankles, knees, shins, and hips were killing him from all the jumping.
What good does losing a few pounds do you if you’re in constant pain and limping all the time?
Then there was the other drawback – he might have lost some weight, but he hadn’t put on any muscle! He felt a little lighter, but not faster. And surely not any stronger.
He knew something had to change. Again.
As fate would have it, Sammy was flipping through the channels one day and came across a Uriah Faber fight. He couldn’t believe the shape he was in! Faber was fast…explosive…strong…and did this kid EVER get tired? Plus, he was around the size Sammy once was.
How would Sammy’s life – and being a cop – change if he could be in that kind of shape?
He knew he had to find out.
A quick google search on how fighters should be working out led him to my site – he knew he’d found what he’d been looking for.
Sammy started my workouts almost immediately and started getting results just as fast. In no time flat, he was:
One of Sammy’s early workouts
losing more fat…a LOT more…around his middle
Before he knew it, Sammy was down to 156lbs and a workout machine. He was running circles around other guys on his squad, his training partners, and everyone else at the gym.
In fact, not too long ago, Sammy finished up yet another kickass workout – Presses, Snatches, Bench Jumps, Complexes, and more. Shirt drenched with sweat, a couple young bucks came up to him and asked him if he was in the military…if he was special forces?
Sammy told them that he had been…23 years ago.
They were stunned – only people in the military, special forces, or elite law enforcement train not only how he was, but as hard as he was.
Sammy is a true case of a guy that put in the true effort, and turned his entire life around.
Do you have the guts to do the same? And if you did…
